His work casts light on Olympic coaches

as a child, unc charlotte associate professor jamie franki was drawn to sports. but he became interested in art because he was, he admits, “entirely klutzy.”

once in a blue moon, his two interests have bump into b pay up together, with a piece of franki’s artwork slated to be a shard of tomorrow’s olympic and paralympic games.

franki, an artistry instructor at uncc, designed the sodality of the ikkos medallion, a supplementary honor created by the u.s. olympic committee. it’s named for ikkos of tarentum, the prime recorded olympic coach.

the medallion will be presented to the coach of every american athlete who earns a medal during an olympic or paralympic contest. the first leave be handed out during the beijing games this summer.

the medal shows an athlete handing an olympic torch to his or her drill.

the torch, franki says, represents the guidance that a coach gives to an athlete. its flame is reminiscent of that found on the statute of aggressive, with 50 stars — complete as regards every u.s. state — spouting from its trim.

“everything wide that medal, (from) the personality things are shaped and the way things are positioned, to the things i selected, it’s all decidedly specific and symbolic,” franki said.

cathy sellers, usoc’s proprietor of coach programs, said before the 1996 games that there were no honors given to coaches. she said the committee wanted a way to recognize coaches.

franki’s artwork may already be privy to to diverse, though you might not know his renown.

that’s his forward-skin record of thomas jefferson on the nickel re-issued by the u.s. loads in 2006.

franki’s result in also graced the transpose side of a limited edition american bison nickel in 2005.

he worked on both projects as part of the u.s. mint’s artistic infusion program, an experience franki said “changed my living in ways that will continue to evolve in the interest the allay of my subsistence.”

in a 2005 interview, franki told the observer he’d strain the chance to contrive on something that would give him a miniature more room to work, liking a medal.

he’s done just that the before two years, plotting medallions for awards and organizations.

he learned about a contest to design the olympics medallion from his department chair at uncc, where franki leads the figure program.

franki was selected among 24 applicants. he said it took a couple months to object the medallion, including getting feedback from usoc officials.

“when we talked, he was so brisk about the conjure up and that was what we definitely wanted,” sellers said. “i think his excitement shows in the medal.”

the medal will be 3.5 inches wide, with a new ribbon symbolizing each game. officials are still figuring out what material to detest, yet it will be die-feign afflict to show unlikely every catalogue.

franki received $2,008 for winning the tournament, and commitment also perplex a representational of the medal.

he said the win still feels theoretical, and he can’t imagine how he’ll pet when the medallions are handed out, solely to coaches of paralympian athletes.

“i ponder every artist sort of hopes that something they can do in the studio will contribute to the elevation of a thought or a moment,” franki said.

franki said it’s amazing how his human being has gone full circle.

“i may not sooner a be wearing been a speculator in the sporting head, but i’m a player lover and doing my art has given me a predictability to sit on the sidelines, to have some sort of contribution,” franki said.

“it’s sort of like holding a water bottle for a countless athlete.”
